LEED v5 Points List: Guide to Sustainable Credits

LEED v5 Points List: A Comprehensive Guide

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v5 certification offers a detailed framework for sustainable building design and construction. This guide focuses on the LEED v5 points list, specifically addressing key areas such as location efficiency, access to quality transit, and sustainable building product selection. Understanding these points is crucial for maximizing your project's sustainability and earning valuable LEED credits.

Location Efficiency and Transportation

LEED v5 emphasizes the importance of location efficiency and access to public transportation. Projects can earn points through various strategies, including locating in buildings with high walkability scores and ensuring proximity to diverse services and public transit options.

Walkable Location (1-3 Points)

To achieve this credit, projects must be located in buildings that meet specific walkability criteria as measured by Walk ScoreĀ® or by being within a 0.25-mile radius of essential services. The scoring system is as follows:

Note that each use type can only be counted once, and no more than two uses per type can be counted. At least three out of five categories must be represented.

Surrounding Density (1-3 Points)

This option rewards projects located in areas with high residential and non-residential density. The density must meet the thresholds outlined in Table 2. For instance, a combined density of 22,000 sq. ft. per acre or 5,050 sq. m. per hectare earns 2 points, while 35,000 sq. ft. per acre or 8,035 sq. m. per hectare earns 3 points.

Access to Transit (1-5 Points)

Projects can earn points by being within walking distance of public transit stops. The minimum daily public transit service required is detailed in Table 3. For example, a project must have at least 72 weekday trips and 30 weekend trips to earn 2 points, increasing to 360 weekday trips and 216 weekend trips for 5 points.

Sustainable Building Product Selection

LEED v5 also includes credits for selecting sustainable building products. Projects can earn up to 10 points by choosing products that meet certain environmental and health criteria. These products are categorized into nine main groups, including paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and furniture.

The Multi-Attribute Score (MAS) is used to evaluate products based on their performance in various criteria areas. Products exceeding 100% MAS earn 1 point, while those exceeding 200% earn 2 points. The total adjusted value for each product category determines the points earned.

Practical Guidance from Real Project Experience

From our experience at ISG, we recommend conducting a thorough analysis of the site's location and existing infrastructure early in the planning phase. This helps in identifying opportunities to maximize points under the location efficiency and transportation credits. Additionally, engaging with local transit authorities can provide insights into future transit plans, which might qualify for planned transit credits.

For sustainable product selection, it's crucial to work closely with suppliers who can provide detailed information on product attributes. This ensures that you can accurately calculate the MAS and maximize your points under this credit.
