LEED v5 Materials List Guide
LEED v5 Materials List: A Comprehensive Guide
The LEED v5 Materials List is a critical component of the Materials and Resources (MR) category, focusing on selecting environmentally responsible materials. This guide helps projects earn up to 5 points by prioritizing products that excel in multiple eco-friendly attributes, including climate, human, ecosystem, social health and equity, and circular economy criteria.
Understanding the LEED v5 Materials Credit
To achieve points under this credit, projects must calculate the multi-attribute adjusted value of product categories using a formula that sums up the values of individual products within each category. Each product's value is determined by its performance across five key criteria areas, with three achievement levels per area. Products meeting multiple criteria levels are considered multi-attribute and contribute significantly to the project's score.
Calculating Multi-Attribute Adjusted Values
The formula for calculating the multi-attribute adjusted value of a product category is as follows:
- Product category adjusted value for LEED = 100 * (Sum of (Product A MAS * Product A value) + (Product B MAS * Product B value) + ...)
- This total value is then divided by the sum of all product values in the category.
A product category adjusted value exceeding 100% earns 1 point, with a maximum of 5 points possible for achieving this across 5 different product categories.
Selecting Building Products
The selection process emphasizes products optimized across multiple attributes, such as promoting human and environmental health, supporting regenerative sourcing, and fostering a circular economy. These criteria align with frameworks like the Mindful Materials Common Materials Framework (CMF) and the AIA Architecture and Design (A&D) Materials Pledge.
Practical Guidance from Real Project Experience
In practice, successful projects often start by identifying key product categories that have a significant environmental impact, such as flooring, paints, and wall finishes. They then research and select products that meet the highest achievement levels across multiple criteria areas. For instance, choosing flooring that is sustainably sourced, low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and recyclable can significantly boost a project's score.
Documentation Requirements
For documentation, project teams need to provide evidence of product selection through contract documents, manufacturer product information, and any relevant reports or calculations. This ensures transparency and compliance with LEED v5 standards.
