Under LEED v5, reaching the Platinum point threshold requires not only accumulating sufficient credits but also fulfilling specific decarbonization requirements.
Decarbonization Requirements for LEED v5 Platinum Certification
To achieve LEED Platinum status, projects must comply with decarbonization standards outlined in several key credits. These include electrification, enhanced energy efficiency, renewable energy, and embodied carbon reduction. Depending on the project type—whether it's new construction, major renovations, or existing buildings—the specific credits required will vary slightly.
New Construction and Major Renovations (BD+C)
- EAc1: Electrification – Projects must eliminate fossil fuel combustion and rely solely on electricity for heating, cooling, and other energy needs.
- EAc3: Enhanced Energy Efficiency – Achieving a minimum of 20% beyond the baseline energy performance as defined by ASHRAE 90.1.
- EAc4: Renewable Energy – At least 10% of the total energy demand must come from on-site or off-site renewable sources.
- MRc2: Reduce Embodied Carbon – Reducing the embodied carbon footprint of materials used in the project by at least 30% compared to conventional materials.
Commercial Interiors (ID+C)
- EAc1: Electrification – Similar to BD+C, eliminating fossil fuel combustion.
- EAc2: Enhanced Energy Efficiency – Achieving a minimum of 20% beyond the baseline energy performance.
- EAc3: Renewable Energy – At least 10% of the total energy demand must come from renewable sources.

Existing Buildings (O+M)
- EAc1: Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions – Achieving a minimum of 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to a baseline year.
