Find LEED Certified Buildings Near You
Discover LEED Certified Buildings Near You
If you're looking for LEED certified buildings near your location, you'll want to explore the various criteria that make a building eligible for certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. LEED certification ensures that a building has been designed and constructed with sustainability in mind, offering benefits like energy efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, and healthier indoor environments.
Understanding LEED Certification Requirements
To find LEED certified buildings near you, it's important to understand the different paths to certification. LEED v5, the latest version, offers several ways for buildings to earn points towards certification:
Base Building Certification
For commercial interiors projects, the base building must be certified under LEED BD+C (Building Design and Construction) using versions LEED v4, v4.1, or v5. This base building must have earned points for either the LT Credit: Surrounding Density and Diverse Uses or LT Credit: Access to Quality Transit, or for LTc3: Compact and Connected Development under LEED v5.
Surrounding Density
A building can also qualify based on its surrounding density. To meet this criterion, the building must be located in an area with a residential density of at least 7 or 12 dwelling units per acre and a nonresidential density (FAR) of 0.5 or 0.8. Combined, these densities must total 22,000 or 35,000 square feet per acre of buildable land.
Access to Transit
Another path to certification involves proximity to public transit. The building must be within walking distance of public transit stops that offer a minimum daily service of 72 weekday trips and 30 weekend trips for 2 points, up to 360 weekday trips and 216 weekend trips for 5 points.
Practical Guidance for Finding LEED Certified Buildings
When searching for LEED certified buildings near you, start by checking the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) project directory. This online resource lists all certified projects, providing details such as the rating system version, level of certification, and the project’s unique LEED identification number.
Using Walk Score®
Walk Score® can be a useful tool to assess the walkability of a location. A score between 60-69 with 4-7 nearby services earns 1 point, while scores of 80 or more with 11 or more services earn 3 points. Ensure that the counted uses represent at least three of the five categories and no more than two uses in each category are counted.
Proximity to Essential Services
Look for buildings located within a quarter-mile radius of essential services like supermarkets, pharmacies, and medical clinics. This not only supports a sustainable lifestyle but also enhances the quality of life for occupants.
