LEED v5 Checklist Guide

LEED Checklist Explained

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) checklist is a comprehensive tool for guiding projects towards achieving sustainability goals. It's structured around eight key categories that cover everything from water efficiency to indoor environmental quality. Each category includes prerequisites and credits that projects must meet to earn points toward certification. Understanding the LEED v5 checklist is crucial for project teams aiming to achieve LEED certification, as it outlines the technical requirements and documentation needed for each credit.

Understanding the LEED Categories

Integrative Process, Planning, and Assessments (IP)

This category focuses on the early stages of project planning, emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability considerations from the outset. Credits here often require project teams to demonstrate a holistic approach to design and construction, including stakeholder engagement and lifecycle assessment.

Location and Transportation (LT)

Projects must consider their location and transportation impacts. Credits in this category might involve selecting sites that minimize environmental impact and promote alternative transportation methods, such as biking or public transit.

Sustainable Sites (SS)

Credits in this category aim to reduce the impact of development on ecosystems and human health. This includes managing stormwater, reducing light pollution, and protecting or restoring habitats.

Water Efficiency (WE)

Efficient water use is critical. Credits here focus on reducing potable water consumption through efficient fixtures and appliances, as well as innovative water management strategies like rainwater harvesting.

Energy and Atmosphere (EA)

Energy efficiency and renewable energy sources are central to this category. Credits encourage the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through energy-efficient design and operation, as well as the use of renewable energy.

Materials and Resources (MR)

This category addresses the selection and use of sustainable materials and resources. Credits include optimizing the use of materials, using recycled content, and promoting waste reduction and recycling.

Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ)

Improving indoor air quality and occupant comfort is the goal of this category. Credits here might involve using low-emitting materials, enhancing thermal comfort, and providing access to daylight and views.

Project Priorities (PR)

Finally, the Project Priorities category allows projects to earn points based on specific local or regional priorities, reflecting the unique sustainability challenges and opportunities of the project's location.

Rating System Selection and Documentation Requirements

Selecting the right LEED rating system is essential. Projects must register under the most appropriate system based on their type and scope. For instance, BD+C (Building Design and Construction) is suitable for new constructions or major renovations where at least 60% of the gross floor area is complete. Documentation for submission typically includes plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and manufacturer product information. It's important to consult the USGBC glossary for definitions and further clarification.

Practical Guidance from Real Project Experience

From our experience at ISG, we've found that early engagement with the LEED checklist can significantly streamline the certification process. Teams should regularly review the checklist to ensure alignment with project goals and adjust strategies as necessary. Engaging with GBCI early in the process can also help clarify any ambiguities and avoid potential pitfalls during the preliminary review.
