ADEK Kindergartens

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is the regulator and operator behind the emirate's public-school system. ISG was engaged to deliver Green Building Management and Estidama Certification on ADEK kindergartens — applying the Pearl Rating System to early-years education infrastructure that serves children from across the emirate.

Why kindergartens are a meaningful sustainability brief

Schools — and especially kindergartens — are an unusually demanding building typology to certify. They have intense daytime occupancy, high outdoor-air ventilation requirements (children, illness, hygiene), strict daylight and acoustic targets, and operational schedules driven entirely by the academic year. Kindergartens additionally need playground integration, low VOC finishes everywhere children touch surfaces, and indoor environmental quality margins above what an office building would require.

Estidama's Pearl Rating System bakes those expectations into its credit structure. Daylight credits, ventilation credits, materials credits — all of them are sized so that an Estidama-rated kindergarten is, by construction, a healthier indoor environment than an unrated one. For ADEK, that's the point: the children using these buildings spend most of their week inside them, so air quality, acoustics, and thermal comfort have measurable effects on attention, attendance, and learning outcomes.

The 2-Pearl floor for government buildings

Government-funded buildings in Abu Dhabi must achieve at least 2 Pearls. ADEK projects sit inside that requirement: they're publicly funded, delivered through the emirate's procurement framework, and they have to demonstrate Estidama compliance before the certificate of completion is issued. ISG's role on the engagement was to take the project through credit strategy, design-stage submissions, construction-stage verification, and final certification with DMT.

Why ADEK matters as a client reference

Public-education infrastructure is one of the slowest-moving, most heavily reviewed contract types in the emirate. ADEK projects involve security clearance for site access, regulatory sign-off on every change order, and operational handover to the schools system itself.
