Understanding the LEED Silver Plaque

The LEED Silver plaque is a significant milestone in the world of sustainable building design and construction. Achieving this level signifies that a project has met rigorous standards set by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, administered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Silver level requires a minimum of 50-59 points out of a possible 110 points across various categories, including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

LEED v5 and Material Selection

In LEED v5, the focus on material selection is crucial for achieving the Silver plaque. Credit MR 274, Building Product Selection and Procurement, specifically targets the use of environmentally responsible materials. Projects must evaluate products based on their performance in five criteria areas: climate health, human health, ecosystem health, social health and equity, and circular economy. Each product can achieve different levels within these criteria, contributing to a multi-attribute score (MAS).

Calculating Multi-Attribute Adjusted Value

To calculate the multi-attribute adjusted value for a product category, you need to consider the MAS of each product within that category. The formula involves multiplying the MAS by the product's value and summing these values for all products in the category. This sum is then divided by the total unadjusted value of all products in the category. If the resulting value exceeds 100%, the project earns 1 point; if it exceeds 200%, it earns 2 points. The maximum points available through this credit are 10, based on the number of product categories meeting the criteria.

Product Categories and Examples

LEED v5 identifies nine key product categories for evaluation: paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, flooring, walls, ceilings, insulation, furniture, composite wood, and plumbing fixtures. Each category includes specific examples like primers, sealers, specialized dyes, and concrete floor toppings. By selecting products that meet the criteria in these categories, projects can significantly boost their LEED score towards the Silver level.
