LEED Regional Priority Points Explained

Understanding LEED Regional Priority Points

LEED Regional Priority points are designed to address specific environmental, social equity, or public health concerns unique to a project's location. By earning these points, projects can contribute to solving pressing issues in their regions while aligning with broader sustainability goals. These points are earned by achieving LEED credits that tackle identified regional priorities.

Identifying Regional Priorities

To earn Regional Priority points, a project must first identify the critical environmental, social equity, or public health issues affecting its location. This could range from water scarcity in arid regions to air quality concerns in urban areas. Once identified, the project must then select and implement LEED credits that directly address these priorities.

Documentation Requirements

Projects aiming to earn Regional Priority points must provide detailed documentation. This includes a description of the regional/local priority, evidence of the strategies adopted, and how these strategies address the identified priority. Supporting materials such as plans, specifications, and compliance reports are essential.

Innovation Strategies

Beyond Regional Priority points, projects can also earn Innovation credits by adopting innovative strategies not covered by the standard LEED rating system. These strategies should aim to reduce environmental impacts, increase decarbonization, and improve social impacts. Projects must document the intent of the strategy, compliance requirements, and the design approach used.

Exemplary Performance

For certain LEED credits, exemplary performance can earn additional points by exceeding the credit requirements or achieving higher incremental thresholds. This encourages projects to go beyond the baseline standards set by LEED.

Pilot Credits

Pilot credits are another avenue for earning points. These credits explore new aspects of sustainable design and construction and are intended to be included in future versions of the LEED rating system. Projects must register for these credits and complete the associated surveys to qualify.

Project Priorities Credit: LEED AP PRc2

This credit rewards projects that include a LEED Accredited Professional (AP) with an active credential on the project team during the certification review phase. The AP must specialize in Building Design and Construction. This ensures that the project benefits from the expertise necessary to navigate the LEED certification process effectively.

Practical Guidance from Real Project Experience

At ISG, we've seen firsthand how Regional Priority points can significantly enhance a project's impact. For instance, in a recent project in a drought-prone area, we focused on water conservation measures, earning points through efficient landscaping and greywater reuse systems. This not only aligned with local needs but also contributed to the project's overall sustainability score.
