LEED Healthcare Scorecard Overview
Understanding the LEED Healthcare Scorecard
The LEED Healthcare Scorecard is a tool used to evaluate the sustainability of healthcare facilities based on various criteria areas such as human health, climate health, and ecosystem health. Each area has defined levels (1, 2, and 3) that products must meet to contribute towards earning points for the project. This scorecard helps ensure that healthcare projects not only meet but exceed environmental and health standards, aligning with the broader goals of LEED certification.
Criteria Areas Explained
Human Health
In the human health criteria area, products are assessed based on their ability to minimize the use and generation of harmful substances. Products can achieve Level 1 by disclosing ingredients through recognized methodologies. Higher levels (2 and 3) require screening to reduce negative health impacts and avoiding a broad range of harmful substances. Documentation like Health Product Declarations (HPD), Declare Labels, and Cradle-to-Cradle Material Health certificates are eligible for these levels.
Climate Health
The climate health criteria focus on reducing or reversing embodied carbon emissions across a product's lifecycle. Level 1 requires quantifying and disclosing these impacts, typically through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Levels 2 and 3 demand further reductions, aiming for carbon neutrality or negativity. Material reuse is also rewarded under this criteria.
Ecosystem Health
This area evaluates products based on their impact on the environment throughout the supply chain. Level 1 involves disclosing raw material sources, while higher levels require measures to reduce and reverse environmental impacts. Documentation such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifications can be used to meet these criteria.
Practical Guidance from Real Projects
From our experience at ISG, integrating the LEED Healthcare Scorecard into project planning early on is crucial. For instance, in a recent hospital renovation, we focused on sourcing materials that met Level 2 or 3 criteria for both human and climate health. By doing so, we not only improved indoor air quality but also significantly reduced the facility's carbon footprint.
Specific LEED v5 Requirements and Thresholds
To achieve LEED Platinum under LEED v5, healthcare projects must fulfill all prerequisites and earn a minimum of 80 points. Key credits include electrification, enhanced energy efficiency, renewable energy, and reducing embodied carbon. The MPRs (Minimum Program Requirements) stipulate that projects must be located on existing land and use reasonable boundaries for evaluation.
