LEED Exam Dates and Certification Periods

LEED Exam Dates: What You Need to Know

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) exam schedule is crucial for professionals aiming to achieve certification under the LEED v5 framework. The exam dates are set by GBCI (Green Business Certification Inc.), and candidates must register well in advance. Typically, exams are offered year-round, but exact dates and availability can vary depending on the testing center. It's important to check the official GBCI website for the most up-to-date information and to book your slot early to secure your preferred date.

Understanding LEED v5 Certification Periods

Once you pass the LEED exam and obtain certification under the LEED v5 framework, particularly for Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance (O+M), your certification is valid for three years from the date of certification acceptance. To maintain this certification, projects must submit annual reports on energy and water usage. Failure to do so will result in the expiration of your certification three years from the initial acceptance date.

Occupancy Considerations in LEED v5

When applying for LEED v5 certification, establishing accurate occupancy counts is critical. These counts should reflect both regular building occupants and visitors. Regular occupants include full-time employees, residents, and students, while visitors might include retail customers or occasional volunteers. If actual occupancy figures are unavailable, default occupancy counts based on gross floor area can be used, as outlined in ASHRAE 62.1-2022, Table 6-11. For instance, a general office space typically has an occupancy of 250 square feet per person.

Public Transit and Walkable Locations

To earn points under LEED v5, projects can demonstrate access to public transit and walkable locations. For public transit, the minimum daily service required varies by the number of weekday and weekend trips, ranging from 72 weekday trips and 30 weekend trips for 2 points, up to 360 weekday trips and 216 weekend trips for 5 points. Walkability is assessed through Walk ScoreĀ® ratings, with scores between 60-69 earning 1 point, 70-79 earning 2 points, and 80 or higher earning 3 points.

Base Building Certification Requirements

For commercial interiors projects seeking LEED ID+C certification, it's beneficial to locate in a building that already holds LEED BD+C certification under LEED v4, v4.1, or v5. This base building certification should include credits related to surrounding density and diverse uses or access to quality transit. The LEED ID+C team must verify these certifications through the USGBC certified projects directory.

Tenant Exclusion Provisions

In LEED v5 O+M: Existing Buildings, up to 10% of the project by gross floor area can be excluded from certain prerequisites or credits if tenant data is unobtainable or out of the applicant's control. However, this exclusion does not apply to the No Smoking prerequisite, where the entire building must comply. Each excluded tenant space must be fully documented in the application.
